Website and Web App — Privacy Policy
Last updated: November 2026
This policy covers the jmilswell.dev website and the Ferry SF web app at jmilswell.dev/ferrysf. The Ferry SF iPhone and Android apps have their own policy: Ferry SF app privacy policy.
Ferry SF is an independent companion for San Francisco Bay ferry riders. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by any ferry operator or agency.
Accounts
No account or sign-in is required. We do not create user profiles, and we do not ask you for your name, email address or any other personal information to use the website or the web app.
Location
If you allow it, your browser shares your location with the web app so it can pick the nearest ferry terminal and, if you tap the location button, follow you on the map. Your location is used only in your browser. It is never sent to our servers or sold to anyone. You can say no, or change your mind in your browser's site settings, and the app still works.
Choices saved in your browser
The web app saves your choices in your browser's local storage: the ferry services you turned on, your port and destinations, light or dark theme, which alerts you have read, and which services you hid on the map. It also keeps a copy of recently loaded schedules, alerts and news so the app loads faster and works if your connection drops. This stays on your device. We do not use it to identify or track you. You can clear it at any time in your browser's site settings.
Ferry data and our servers
To show schedules, service alerts, news and live boat positions, the web app requests public ferry data from our backend. These requests are not used to build advertising profiles. The website is hosted on Cloudflare, and the backend runs on Fly.io. Like most hosts, they keep short-lived server logs (such as IP address and browser type) for operations and security.
The map is drawn with map tiles and styles that your browser loads directly from OpenFreeMap, which uses OpenStreetMap data. That service can see your IP address when it serves them.
Advertising
The website and the web app are free and may show ads provided by Google AdSense. The Google ad code loads on the pages of this website. Google and its advertising partners may use cookies, device identifiers and your IP address to deliver and measure ads and, unless you opt out, to personalize them based on your activity across sites and apps. We do not receive that information and we do not sell your personal information.

- Turn off personalized ads in your Google account: adssettings.google.com
- Opt out of personalized ads from many advertisers: aboutads.info/choices
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, a consent message lets you choose whether ads may use cookies and similar technologies to personalize ads. You can change that choice later from the same message.
Children
The website and web app are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Parents can use browser and device controls to limit ad personalization.
Changes
If we change how the website or web app handles data, we will update this page and the date at the top.
